So I saw Pirates 2 yesterday with Mark and Nick, and even though other people who have seen it are already raving about it, I didn't care for it. In fact, even though I wasn't expecting a super great movie, I still felt disappointed. I feel that in their attempts to write in action-packed adventure, the movie makers lost the delicate nuances that made Johnny Depp's performance in Pirates 1 the good movie that it was. I feel that the moments in the sequel that were intended to provide humor were a little too outlandish to achieve the desired effect. In addition, the 150 plus minute run time of the movie was a big drawback. Where as Superman was a two and a half hour movie that didn't feel like two and a half hours, Pirates 2 was a two and a half hour movie that left me glancing at my watch waiting for it to end for the last 45 minutes. Needless to say, I felt Orlando Bloom put on a truly delightful performance, and he in my opinion definitely stole the show. As far as Keira Knightley's performance is concerned, she was nothing more than a vapid waste of a character. My final gripe will provide a wee little bit of a plot spoiler (nothing major), so I will allow those of you who don't wish to read about the film to avert your eyes:

Okay, that should be enough...anyway, the one last thing I didn't like about the movie were the ridiculous animal-pirates (yes, I know I'm supposed to suspend my disbelief, but really...come on). And am I to believe that Keira Knightley is really willing to go off on an adventure and save Johnny Depp in the third installment after what he did in this movie? Meh. I think I'll save Pirates 3 for a DVD watch. Going to the movie will probably cost 20 dollars by the time it comes out anyway.
